Senator Representing Plateau North in the National Assembly, Sen Istifanus Gyang has noted with deep concern the plight of citizens afflicted by poverty and hunger and the stampede that resulted from scramble for palliatives stocked in government warehouses across states of the Federation.

Senator in a Press statement signed and issued to Journalists in Jos on Tuesday by his Special Assistant on Media and Protocol Hon. Musa Ibrahim Ashoms, says when the warehousing of the palliatives for periods longer than necessary became public knowledge, citizens out of frustration, resorted to self help.

“This is however not to concede nor excuse the havoc and destruction of public and private property wrought by hoodlums who took advantage of an otherwise genuine and well intentioned EndSARS protest by Nigerian Youth. These attacks are clear acts of criminality and are therefore not justifiable.

“To ignore the widespread brigandage by the hoodlums is to court anarchy. This will inevitably mar the future that we all hope for.

“While not opposing lawful protest as exemplified by EndSARS, it is necessary to distinguish between genuine and well intended protests on the one hand and destructive acts of criminality on the other.

Senator Gyang however call on Plateau people, the youths in particular, to resist the temptation of allowing brigandage and impunity to gain ascendancy and become the order of the day. Doing so will not only be counterproductive but will have adverse effects on the safety and well being of the people.

Senator Gyang urges government to draw lessons and be more sensitive to the plight of citizens and prioritize policies and measures that pertains to poverty alleviation and employment generation among others and to address the fundamental issues that gave rise to the EndSARS nationwide youth protest.
