EndSARS is a metaphor for ending many societal ills –Dr Chris Piwuna

Dr, Chris Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist at the University of Jos was the speaker on the ViewPointNigeria webinar series of Thursday 22nd October 2020.

Dr. Piwuna spoke on the topic “What lessons are we learning from the current EndSARS protest”.

Speaking, he established the thesis of his argument on the fact that the key lessons learnt from the protests, were around the fact that the #EndSARS slogan is a metaphor for a myriad of issues –which include: bad governance, corruption, nepotism, tribalism, failed promises, moral decadence, herdsmen attacks, armed robbery etc.

He posited that most of the youths on the streets have individual stories and experiences which have led them to come out and protest. He recognized the symbolism of the act of defiance shown by the protesters and posited that this new show of collective resolve by the youths shows that whoever takes leadership positions in the country will be alive to the power of the people.

Contributors on the webinar also echoed, expanded and re-enforced the points made by Dr Piwuna, saying there is huge opportunity for the youth to become a critical voice in governance going forward.

Some of the notable contributors on the call included: Barr. Solomon Dalung (former Minister of Youths and Sports), Dr Patrick Dakum (CEO of the Institute of Human Virology), Dr Mark Attah (Cambridge University – UK), Prof Salamatu Machunga-Mambula (University of Abuja), Mr Mathew Attah, General Raphael Isa (former Director of Army Public Relations), Dr La’azarus Maigoro (Chairman ASUU Unijos), Mr Obadiah Tohomdet (former World Bank Communications specialists), Dr. Jimam Lar (Head of Department History of Unijos), Mr Yakubu Jang (Business man).
