Dr Patrick Dakum’s expertise on COVID-19, a bright spark for Plateau State.

There are two types of individuals, those who fade into oblivion in the face of adversity or crisis and those who stand-out, thrive and excel.

In the latter of those two categories fits Dr Patrick Dakum, the CEO of the institute of human virology –who in these perilous COVID-19 times has become a trusted voice, leading Nigeria’s COVID-19 charge.

Dr. Patrick Dakum has been at the forefront of setting the agenda for our nation’s COVID-19 response –providing expert and incisive analysis and insights that have defined both the public and Government’s COVID-19 response.

Not for a very long time has Plateau State had a technocrat or academic who has stood-out and led national issues as we’ve seen in the last few months by Dr. Patrick Dakum. Of course Plateau has had political juggernauts who had national and international reckoning. It has also produced world-class artists, musicians, footballers, sportsmen & sportswomen etc.

But pure technocrats who are recognised on the basis of their technical know-how, academic prowess or medical nous etc have been few-and-far between on the Plateau. Unfortunately, very few of our sons & daughters are justifiably ascribed the tag of “expert” in their field of endeavour, whether in science, medicine or engineering etc). Typically, those experts are from the O-O-O states (Ogun, Osun, Oyo) etc or other parts of Southern NIGERIA.

But here on the hills of Plateau, we have an unassuming and outstanding son whose medical expertise is recognised, cherished and sought after. Whose opinion on matters of life and death (such as COVID-19 ) is sought-after, imbibed and implemented. This, is something to be proud-of and it is worthy of note.

Many cynics will say, is it not just the discussions on Channels TV etc? Well it has been much more than that —through the institute of Human Virology (which he is CEO) numerous policy guidance, public health advice and insights about virus propagation, infection rates, infection pathways etc have been issued and turned into concrete policy by both the Federal and State Governments to save lives. In addition, on the home-front of Plateau, the fellow has worked assiduously with the Plateau state government to assist in its policy formulation and overall response.

As you round up this short piece, remember to stay home, maintain the usual 2 metres social distance and save lives.
